Greetings readers! :)

just so you know, TONE is still alive and kicking alright haha.

last monday (30th March), we just hit the studio for our first ever recording.

that's right, we would like to cut an album sometime soon (hopefully lah, we need more funding!)

yup and you hear it first from us.

recording took place at Roland, our sound engineer's place.

check out the view from his studio!

first to go was jeremy and he's all set!

while jeremy was recording, the rest of us decide to hang around at the living room.
but we couldn't stay for long as the mic can still pick up our voices.
how wicked!
so we finally settled down at the balcony.

it's funny how rayner and junkai were doing the same pose haha.

kahei's trying to submit her assignment online, rayner continues his job hunting journey.

junkai checks if his subway order was correct.

just in case he texted wrongly.
true enough, there was a spelling error haha.

jeremy was done after an hour or so.
honestly, I can't remember exactly how long he took or how long the others took for that matter. so I'm just gonna say an hour or so for the rest of us haha.

Firstly, thanks Tonians for the sweetest birthday ever=) i actually didn't expect anyone to remember (much less buy cake and celebrate=D!) my birthday, but oh my gawd, so awesome la=D!!!! thanks peeps, love you guys sooooooo much=)

And TONE just concluded a gig at Ray's cousin's wedding! Think all three girls (Jasmine, Cindy, and me) had the 冲动 to go and get married, haha=P there's just something magical about marriages, wheeee=)

The girls started camer-ing ( i decided "cam- whoring" is not a very glamourous word... in case there are parents who dcide to visit our blog=P) in the toilet while doing make-up... cool colour effects of Jasmine's camera!

we continued to do more camer-ing while inside the banquet dinning area...

to be honest, i've grown to love everything about TONE so much that every gig we put up, every time we meet to practice... it's just plain fantastic every single time=) not that we are all divine singers (but we aspire to be!), but rather... when you have 6 people sharing the same passion, all completely driven by their own initiatives, and all so ready and willing to be part of and accept each other... there's this special tingling feeling that you can't really put into words...

It's like... the 6 of us are meant to be here, we're meant to do these things, and we're meant to achieve even greater things together...

PRE ISOTONIC JITTERS

ROAOAARRRRRRR I'M HAVING SERIOUS PRE-CONCERT JITTERS.

It's not that we're not prepared - It's not that we can't sell tickets - It's not that I am afraid of performing.

Maybe I'm just excited huh.

Oh yeah, I just realised that this is the FIRST POST within the last approx 1 month+ so I figured i should blog something in case you know, someone/some people think that the members of TONE have died from exhaustion.

But seriously - It has been really, really tough on all of us. It has been difficult to co-ordinate our schedules.. With 3 NS Boys (1 Combat, 1 Admin, 1 MDC), 1 JC Girl, 1 Uni Girl.. You cannot fathom the amount of trouble (and SMSes) it takes to plan just ONE FULL rehearsal. Jun Kai can only bookout over the weekend, JC and Uni Girls have to study etc. I'm surprised that we've actually managed to clock about 40 hours of rehearsals for this month alone.

Anyways, I have faith that we'll do well for the concert. Even though we MIGHT (I'm not saying that we will!) not attain the ideal standards that we excpect for the concert, I'm sure that we'll be good enough. Anything more than that would be a bonus :) I'm definitely counting on the bonus though.

TONIANS! I'm so proud of all of you (us) and how we've pulled through all the rubbish , toil and sweat as a team. From silly administrative problems to creative problems - This is the last stretch and I'm soo psyched. LET'S ALL GET PSYCHED UP TOGETHER OKAY??? Wanna work the stage with you guys *ENTERS DELIRIOUS STATE* WOOHHOOOOOOOOO!

But on a more serious note, I'm pretty emotionally overwhelmed. It seems as though everything's falling into place after all. Was sooo worried last week. Even though things might not turn out to be fantastic, I know that we've all tried our best. Really. From sourcing for sponsors, from outreach to schools for ticket sales, from shamelessly selling tickets, from spontaneously coming up with new arrangements (e.g. TTBA, SMIL *General Public: DON'T TELL YOU! Only TONE members can decipher the acronyms*), from coming up with choreography (ALOT), from just sticking together as one even though things look bleak at times. This is NOT our Day job. This is our Passion. Thank you all for taking time off studies, sacrificing family time, sacrificing weekends, taking time off work and taking leave just to make this possible.

To whoever's reading this: I implore you to come and experience the magic of our hard work. I don't know that the rest think, but I, CHEN JIA JUN think that we deserve to be credited in some way or another. I won't ever let our hard work go to waste.

ROAAAARRRRRR.

I realised that it's been around 10 days since the last post -

WHY SO DEAD?!

(I foresee a really crappy I'm-blogging-for-the-sake-of-blogging kind of post)

First things first: I did not let Cindy hear the (now famous) "Cai Yuan Gun Gun" Song! I never break my promise ah - Only the 5 of us have heard it, no one else. Haha.

.......But I bet its comic value will certainly bring our blog more hits. HEH.

CHIN TOW I'm just kidding!

Anyway yesterday's practice/rehearsal was very interesting (and tiring). I personally have not seen any local a cappella group try to pull off such a 'stunt' before. (Genre-wise and concept-wise) OH WELL. If you're really itching to find out what it is that TONE is planning... You've gotta wait and WATCH OUR CONCERT. Kudos to Jer for his great idea!

Haha what a shameless plug. But what else can you expect from the resident shameless man?

Anyways today is gonna be a very, very uneventful day. It's gonna be a day of arranging new music, packing my (awfully messy) room and trying to think what I wanna do in Uni in the future. SINGAPORE IS REALLY LACKING IN A VARIETY OF UNI COURSES AVAILABLE.

Tone is now looking for a Soprano!

Voices:
- High Soprano (Low G/G# - High High C) i.e. 2Cs above Mid C
- Mezzo Soprano (Low F# - High A/A#)
- Low Soprano (Low E - High G/G#)

Requirements:- Commit rehearsals at least 3 sessions/month (will take exams and school schedules in regard)- More rehearsals (approx. 4-5) closer to concert dates.
- Responsible in learning own music with computer music program NWC and independent singer
- Have a keen ear for harmony
- Can hold own harmony line
- Unphased by stage performance or speaking or singing in public
- Music theory background is NOT a must, but a plus.
- Able to sing Pop Vocals.- Preferably 17-20 years old (as of 2007) i.e. JC1 in 2007
- Fun and lively individual; i.e. Can be silly & nonsensical at times.
- NO stuck up arrogant asses. Haha!

Yesterday we had TONE's rehersal and SOMETHING SPECIAL. LOL. Coincidentally jer jas and me wore RED........ hmm. Maybe we are in the mood to celebrate new year already. HAHA! OK. So the thing is we were having reh at junkai's home, RAYNERXZXZ shuai ge picked me up from EUNOS. Very nice indeed. And we ended going in circles for 1/2 hr. I was about to call the police cause i thought rayner's gonna sell me off to some bangalah. HHAAHA. And we finally reach Bishan and picked up Jasmine and Jeremy. ^^ Then headed off to Junkai's house. Aft. Reh we celebrated rayner's birthday. It was sort of a surprise. haha ;D

OH oh, rayner brought along very delicious chocolates! NYAAAA! OISHII!

Anyway, I just added a TONE radio on the side portion of the blog - TONE wants to spread the Christmas cheer with all visitors!

Voices:
- High Soprano (Low G/G# - High High C) i.e. 2Cs above Mid C
- Mezzo Soprano (Low F# - High A/A#)
- Low Soprano (Low E - High G/G#)

Requirements:
- Commit rehearsals at least 3 sessions/month (will take exams and school schedules in regard)
- More rehearsals (approx. 4-5) closer to concert dates.
- Responsible in learning own music with computer music program NWC and independent singer

- Have a keen ear for harmony
- Can hold own harmony line
- Unphased by stage performance or speaking or singing in public
- Music theory background is NOT a must, but a plus.
- Able to sing Pop Vocals.

- Preferably 17-20 years old (as of 2007) i.e. JC1 in 2007
- Fun and lively individual; i.e. Can be silly & nonsensical at times.
- NO stuck up arrogant asses. Haha!

Auditions generally include:
- A simple set piece to learn and harmonize on spot with rest of group
- A Solo delivery (1 other language + 1 English)

Well, 2 days of much anticipated acappella championship ended with quite a blast. :)
Some groups were dashing! :) I'm impressed. And at the same time i wished we were up there too. Holding that mic and singing out hearts out. :D
I'm not going to the finals though, and neither am i going to the acappella fest this year.

So life as a JC1 isn't really like a honeymoon afterall.

Ban Mian Syndrome Makes a Comeback!

Today's peformance at BBC was alright, I should say.

Though no one was really listening to us.

But everything sounded good.

We received a couple of compliments as well, keep it up Tone!

Recently, I've noticed about this Ban Mian syndrome making a comeback!

And, it's highly contagious.

The only way to prevent yourself from having it is to clean your ears everyday.

At least it's working for me.

The number of times each of us Ban Mian-ed is being recorded.

So beware!

Yay! Finally back from the A levels.. God.. i miss typing nonsense on my keyboard. All those late nights online at the PRB website and what not instead of typing ennnndddllllesssslllyyy on blogs is over!!!

Just had rehearsal today at one of our favourite spaces (Starbucks @ Wisma Atria). Friendly staff, nice drinks and cakes, comfy sofas; what's not to like? They would even turn down the music for us! Though, it's not very condusive as the crowd is a bit noisy. What to do....? No money to rent rehearsal space, plus all of us live at the ends of the world.

Rehearsed new song today. "All I Want For Christmas Is You", original by Mariah Carey (i suppose). Guess who's the SOLO? U will never guess it! Not in a million years!

Though, i'd have to disclaim that so far, my solo sucks. Never sung a solo for so loooooooooong! The technique is totally different. Changing key is also a big problem. Though I think I got it already after trying after rehearsal. Just have to wait till Monday to find out if it works.

Rayner made a stupid joke again today. So dumb that I forgot what it was. Hmmm...
Chin tow was "the ONE [most] never early" today. I do not get how people (i.e. R & C) can mistake an sms that blatantly states 830AM to be 830PM! Ri-di-cu-lous! Haha..
Jas & Jun are the earliest (as usual). And I seem to be arriving earlier and earlier! ^_^

They bought me a B'dae gift + a B'dae Peppermint choc cake from Starbucks. Tasty.

:) How unexpected ccas i have. ^_^
gardening is fun you know, every morning i come to school and can't wait to water the plants. One of the reasons why i like to water the plants is because, i dont have to do silent reading if i am doing gardening. :)
BUT HEY, it's still fun. Just that every morning i pray it don't rain, cause if rain, very little things can be done, we can only go and take the... thingy thingy i dont know what is it called. Shovel? Mini shovels and loosen the soil then go back to silent reading.
Silent reading is a DREAD. Really. -_-"

Anyway, Jasmine and Me are like completely opposite personalities.
She's like um hahahs i dont know, opposite. I'm noisy, she's more tame. I'm crazy, she's more logical. I'm more rebellious, she's more stick to rules. hahahs.
So you see.. WE HAVE OUR UNIQUENESS.
oh yeah, as you can see, jasmine is the more femenine one. I'm still trying to get my smell out. AHHAHAAHHAHA. ;)

Please do not underestimate GIRL POWER in TONE okay!

Here's why:

1. Both girls do not share the same favourite colour.

But that's okay, coz this shows our individuality!
Unlike the guys, green is their favourite.
Like, duh.

2. Both girls are HIGHLY resourceful.

Angela is the one who came up with this blog.
If she hadn't, I don't think we can have such heated topics to discuss here!
And, who do you look for when you don't scores ?
ME!
Yes, though I'm the unofficial score manager, but I do keep track of our music.
FYI: Ray, you still owe me 2 copies of Teresa Teng Medley scores!
(It's okay if you don't return, I'm still going to print another one anyway)

3. Both girls have DECENT fashion sense.

I suppose Angela's fashion style is highly complex, considering the fact that she hasn't found hers.
That's fine, coz at least she can present herself properly.
Me, simplicity is the key.
See, we are so better off than the guys.

4. Both girls are talented.

Angela has joined various CCAs in her school life.
From Chinese Orchestra in primary school then to choir in secondary and to band in JC (for a short while)and finally cricket!
Now do you see her versatility ?
I was a CCA hopper in primary school, changing CCA year after year until I settled in Movement and Dance.
Yah, dance.
We work with tambourine and tap them as we dance.
Is it a little unexpected ?
OH! We can percuss too!
Though only simple 'du-ke du-ke', but we are working on it!

5. One of us has an incredible range.

Yes, Angela has a range of 4 octaves!
Can you do it ?
Sadly, I can't fufil this requirement but I'm working on it!

Yup, 5 strong points from the girls.

I DO NOT wear FBT shorts in orchard road unless I need to.

Since TONE is on a "Introduction Streak", I shall comment and list some of the likely rehearsal venues that Tone likes to rehearse at.

Tip to note:
Tone's rehearsal spaces are often either:
1. Hot but quiet
2. Dirty but Acoustic
3. Stuffy but spacious
4. Noisy but comfortable
5. Condusive but dark
6. Perfect but Banned

1. The space outside Orchard MRT toilet.
We used to love this space, it's public so we won't get chased out. Probably also because security was watching other people other than silly teenagers rehearsing. We love the black marble walls and the stench from the toilet. The acidic urine just makes our vocal chords go "Wooooooo..."

2. The linkway between Istana park and Dhoby Ghaut MRT.
We like to use used paper as a floor mat. Add in an inversed straw hat, rags for clothes and you've got yourself a new hit single! "Beggar Teens".

3. The "hidden" stairwell at Bugis Junction next to Singtel shop.
We like this space to do choreography. It have fabulous acoustics coz it's an enclosed area. The sound resonates so well that we don't know if we are out of tune. We love to dance like fools on our very professionally done choreography that we pull off with such oomph and enthusiasim. 4. The Starbucks cafe at Wisma Atria level 4.
This is next to the toilet that Ray always cries at coz we sing his fantastic arrangement very badly. (ref to previous post). It is now seemingly our favourite haunt to rehearse. JunKai named the corner we rehearse "The Waiting Hole" because people are always waiting for the ones never early.

5. The Esplanade outdoor area by the river.
It is such a nice, windy place to rehearse. Most of the time quiet where you can hear yourself. It is however so fantastically dark that prawn noodle gravy can spill on jeans and leave a "sea-smell" (Notice, I am being very olfactory here). We also can't read scores well and require a torch from a phone to do so. Moreover, Japanese tourists often pop out of the oblivious darkness to chance upon us singing Love Love Couple na Furi Furi de Chu. Which of course they have to request for an encore and we have to sing for them (allowing them to video record us without copyright).

6. The airconditioned Esplanade areas.
We get shoo-ed.

Yeah!! I'm the last to post something here. Ok fine, nothing to be excited about. I think i'm the only one who doesn't really miss acappella much. Why? BECOS YOU GUYS JUST LEFT ME STANDING THERE ALONE!! Jer and Ray having A level break, Jas having O level break, and Ang having Promos study break. Where is mine? -.- So not fair. Fine fine, that's not the main point why i posted.

Ok, I'm here to tell you guys the funny facts about the guys (Jer, Ray, Ben)in TONE.

1) All three guys' favourite colour is green.
Any guys out there need any green stuffs just borrow it from us. (espcially ray :p)

2) All three guys are multi-"used".
Jer can take the Bass part and the Sop part, but actually he is a Baritone. Ray can take the Bari part, the Tenor part and sometimes the Bass part. For me, I can take the Tenor part, Alto part, Bari part (like duh?) and never given the chance to take the Bass part. -.-

3) All three guys are weirdos with clothes?
Ray likes to wear the same shirt for every practice with TONE (ok, he has been working on it). Jer likes to wear his FBT shorts while walking on the road in Orchard. I like to wear black stuffs, I've got like more then 10 pieces of black shirts/pants/tee-shirts. (and black underwear if you like to know)

4) All three guys come at different time.
Normally, I will reach first, then Jer, then Ray. Sometimes Ray doesn't even turn up at all. (Ok, only once)

5) All three guys have their own thingy with music.
Jer likes it rock, Ray likes it punk, and I like it slow with a tinge of sadness.

See!! 5 strong points about the guys in TONE!!
For the girls, let me think about it again.

I'm occupied with school work i hardly have time to think about acappella, which is a pretty sad thing.
and one thing that might shock you guys is...........

I tried to join Chinese Orchestra in my school.

and good thing is,
i'm playing the pipa.

I've come to clear my name.

haha I do not go to the toilet next to starbucks and sulk cos of that!

Anyway here is RAYNER TAN'S 6 signs of pre-stage nervousness. (yes im that bored)

1) You start saying "haissss" repeatedly 5-10 mins before the performance.
2) your heart beats at twice its normal rate.
3) You insist on drinking water every 5 minutes
4) You drink up half a bottle of nin jiom pi pa gao within an hour
5) You start taking weird photos of people in emo poses
6) You randomly turn to your group members and go "haisss. How?"

ain't it true?

If tone ever becomes famous i'm going to delete this post. HAHAHA. So dumb.

Anyway. I recommend Christina Aguilera's up and coming album: "Back to Basics". She's a damn good vocalist. If you like "Ain't no other man", you'll like most of the tracks in this album, from the cute "candyman" to the melancholic "hurt". Yeah. The album got leaked on the net. haha. apparently. My friend sent me half the album.

And to Jas and Jer, You download her songs and harmonise ur heads off. Her songs are HEAVILY harmonised. hahaha. Might arrange smth from there when i'm free.

But right now, gonna mug for prelims. 5 weeks left! ARGH.

And the rest of you better mug hard too la.

OH YEAH.

there's a chinese pop male newcomer called "TONE". Smack his face ah. Now are we committing any infringement of copyrights? I hope not.

Was difficulty getting access to this account.
But hey, here I am.
It's time for me to contribute!

Apparently, my player died on me this week.
So no TONE's singing for at least a month!
Sigh.

As much as I thought Jeremy's desperation to harmonise was a little exaggerated, I couldn't agree more.
(I hope my phrasing was okay, Error Sensitive Machine aka Jeremy!)
Everyday as I sing the national anthem, I would try to harmonise with it.
Which sounds ridiculous lah.

Okay, enough of my nonsense.
Should end this entry now.

Hope everyone is doing fine with studies and all.
Take lots of water, weather is rather odd these days.

Hey all, Ray here. And since i'm so free today (haha I'm out sick) I shall tell you more about TONE, lest you happened to stumble upon our humble little blog by accident and you know nuts about us or A cappella. =)

Tone is the name of our A cappella group!
A cappella basically means singing without the use of and musical instruments (voices only).
Tone is a quintet with Angela as the Soprano (Highest female voice), Jasmine as the Alto (low female voice), Benjamin as the Tenor (high male voice), Rayner as the Baritone (middle ranged male voice) and Jeremy as the Bass (low male voice). Well, Actually we don't really stick to our supposed parts. Haha.

The original tone was formed way back, during the Christmas period of 2004. The members of Tone came and went.. From 8 members initially, to the 5 of us: Jasmine, Jeremy, Benjamin, Rayner, Angela. Haha and It'll stay that way. (I hope).

Musical Director : Benjamin
Treasurer/unofficial score manager: Jasmine

Tone has performed in many many places. Wisma Atria, The Esplanade, Harbourfront point etc... Just to name a few. So if you're interested in finding out where's our next gig, stay tuned to this blog! Right now Tone is taking a study break until the end of our exams. We'll be performing during the Christmas period though. Watch out for us then!

Hello hello.. Guess i'm the first official blogger here.

Well.. it has been a good past month or so in preparation for the performances and the competition. We have progressed really far within such short and tight rehearsals schedules. Glad we're going somewhere! This is how far we can go in just one month. So just imagine the progress that would come if we pursue forward for 3-6 months! 0_0

Tentative Plans for Tone:
1. Official hiatus till December or late November.
2. Prepare for X'mas
3. Prepare for (hopefully) full length concert next year March
4. Expand repertoire.
5. A simple CD perhaps?
6. An official website.

I think those things would come well on its way. Just have to be patient guys!

Woooo.. Just checked email. Ray arranged "Hey Baby" by no doubt.. Haha.. Sounds good.. Seems workable.. Haha. Never know what you can get out of Ray. Sometimes he just pops out and surprizes you with an arrangement and force you to sing it. And when you don't sing his arrangement, he will walk away and sulk at the toilet of wisma atria besides starbucks. That's why after performances he always disappear - coz we sang his arrangements badly.

Please believe what I say above.

Arrrghhh.. I am dying to harmonize (not that I do most of the time - basses go on their merry way i.e. I smoke my way thru songs)!
I have HWS - Harmony Withdrawal Syndrome.
I have so much HWS that i resorted to ask my sister and mother to harmonize this song on radio! AHhhhhhhh!
